Deskripsi
Elaborately carved room screen, originally probably from the meeting hall in the Castle of Batavia, see the drawing in the Schau-Platz etc. of Heydt (reproduced in de Haan, Oud Batavia, K.8). On top below the crown are the coats of arms of Batavia (in the middle) flanked by those of the six towns i Holland where chambers of the VOC resided, from left to right Delft, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, (Batavia), Middelburg, Hoorn and Enkhuizen. The figure in the center of the screen carries symbols usually attributed to the goddess Pallas Athena like the armour suit and the shield decorated with the head of Medusa after she was cursed by Athena and her beautiful face turned ugly with hair in the form of snakes. However, the figure has the breast of a man, and a rather boyish face, so cannot be Athena herself.
